AIR Awards and Indie-Con 2020 confirmed for Adelaide

Lock it in: The AIR Awards and Indie-Con Australia conference will return to Adelaide this October.

The pandemic has ruined most of 2020, though organisers of the indie community’s annual awards nights and its companion conference are keen to put all that in the rearview.

Today, the Australian Independent Record Labels Association announces the 2020 AIR Awards will take place at Adelaide’s Lion Arts, on Thursday, 1st October 2020.

There are contingencies in place.

If COVID-19 restrictions prevent a physical gathering from taking place, the 2020 Awards will be broadcast in digital form, according to the peak body.

AIR’s Indie-Con Australia conference will brace the awards ceremony, and is all set for Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd October at Lot Fourteen, in the South Australian capital.

This year’s gathering will once again explore issues specifically relevant to the independent music sector.

If the coronavirus forces Lot Fourteen to close its doors, the conference will take place virtually.

The South Australian Government is on board as a major partner for both Indie-Con and the AIR Awards.

“We look forward to making Adelaide our home for the AIR Awards and our Indie-Con Australia Conference over the next three years and are extremely grateful for the continued support from South Australia’s Department for Innovation and Skills and the South Australian Tourism Commission,” comments Maria Amato AIR GM.

Also today, AIR serves up the full list of nominations. Tones And I looks to build on her haul of 2019 ARIA Award wins with AIR Awards nods for Independent Song Of The Year (‘Dance Monkey’, Best Independent Pop Album Or EP (‘The Kids are Coming’) and Breakthrough Independent Artist Of The Year.

There are multiple nods for Julia Jacklin, Sampa The Great, Stella Donnelly, The Teskey Brothers, Ainslie Wills and more.

“The Indie-Con Australia conference provides the music industry both nationally and locally an opportunity to come together to support each other through these challenging times as well as have important conversations about navigating the future,” comments state Innovation and Skills Minister David Pisoni in a statement.

“The AIR Awards will recognise and celebrate the inspiring talent of Australia’s independent artists during what has been a tough time for the music industry. Congratulations to all the award nominees on their success.”
