Angie McMahon signs record deal with Kobalt’s AWAL

With a new recording deal and a debut album on the way, Angie McMahon is ready to take on the world.

The Melbourne singer and songwriter has signed up with Kobalt’s recording company AWAL, which will provide a range of services, including global marketing, campaign coordination, and global distribution.

McMahon arrangement with AWAL Recordings covers the world outside North America, and it comes ahead of the rising rocker’s full-length album release Salt, due out later this year.

For the past two years, McMahon’s career has been tracking sharply up.

In 2017, McMahon won the Josh Pyke Partnership, which came with industry mentorship and a $7,500 grant to kick-start her ambitions.

A Triple J favourite, McMahon’s 2017 single ‘Slow Mover’ reached No.33 on the Hottest 100 countdown, and is now gold certified.

The Victorian artist also nabbed two APRA Award nominations, with ‘Slow Mover’ shortlisted for the coveted Song of the Year at the 2019 ceremony, eventually won by Amy Shark’s ‘I Said Hi.’

Another big honour came McMahon’s way in March, when she took out SXSW’s Grulke Prize for Developing Non-U.S. Act, which has previously been won by Chvrches, Courtney Barnett and others.

McMahon “writes and performs across the full dynamic spectrum, shifting between gravelly intimacy and pounding rock, and her performances at SXSW bounced between whisper-quiet tones and cathartic rock roars,” explained SXSW’s organising team as they announced her win.

The following month, “Keeping Time” was named one of NPR Music’s “Best New Songs” in the United States.

McMahon is a festivals regular, having played Splendour in the Grass, Laneway Festival, Groovin the Moo and many more, and she has toured with or supported the likes of Father John Misty, The Shins, Alanis Morissette, Angus & Julia Stone, Leon Bridges and Mumford & Sons and Pixies.

With the announcement of the new partnership, Ben Godding, marketing director, AWAL, Australia said: “It’s been amazing to watch Angie develop into the huge success that she is today. Angie embodies all the attributes of a true independent artist – extremely creative and totally authentic.”

It’s an alliance that dates back to 2017. “Since AWAL released my first song, I’ve wanted to keep working with them because I’ve always felt that I can make my own calls, be authentic and be innovative,” adds McMahon.

“It is a free space to have the creativity and career that I envision without any bullshit. I’m so grateful to them for taking on my first album and holding me in their family with so much support.”
