Once in a while, the internet offers the music industry a quirky moment of hilarity. A new children’s song called ‘Baby Shark’ is one of them.

The song, which features lyrics like ‘Baby shark, doo doo doo doo doo doo’ and a dance to go along with it, has entered the UK Official Charts at #37.

Sitting above ‘This Is Me’ by Keala Settle and ‘I Like It’ by Cardi B, ‘Baby Shark’ has actually been around since 2007, but a 2016 cover of the track gained momentum last month on YouTube and has since accrued 1.6 billion views. The clip also features 3.1 million ‘thumbs up’, 1.2 million ‘thumbs down’.

The UK singles chart has been incorporating data from video streams for since July. The Official Charts Company opted to tweak its chart formula after a year-long study, during which time the charts compiler ran a parallel test chart to weed out bugs and identify any red flags before a proper launch.

Now, the chart is bearing the fruit of that decision. Video views of ‘Baby Shark’, along with audio streams has this week pushed the song into the UK charts.

Produced by a South Korean kids’ entertainment company called Pinkfong, ‘Baby Shark”s roots hark all the way back to a 1900s children’s rhyme. Following that, a now decade-old version by German techno version called Kleiner Hai by Alemuel was translated into English.

As outlined by The Irish Times, an English translation of a 2012 collection of summer camp songs ends with the singer losing a limb to the shark, then dying.
