Clinton Kane, the Perth kid with the ‘crazy voice,’ is flying up the U.K. chart

Clinton Kane just might be the hottest homegrown artist you’ve never heard of. That’s all about to change.

The Perth youngster is flying high on the midweek U.K. chart with ‘I Guess I’m In Love,’ a smooth ballad that showcases a voice that’s both honey-dunked and tougher than your high-school enemy.

When the chart proper is published this Friday, Kane looks certain to make his U.K. Top 40 debut with the tune, which flies in at No. 21 on the midweek chart (cooling slightly from a No. 19 ranking after the weekend), and has the Official Charts Company anointing him a “rising star.”

Though relatively unknown in his homeland, Kane’s star has been on the rise for the past year or more, with a major label deal in his pocket, superstar collaborations and chart impressions on both sides of the Atlantic.

Born to a Filipino father and Norwegian mother, Kane grew up living between Western Australia and the U.K. and is a self-taught singer and multi-instrumentalist (guitar, piano, and drums).

The youngster qualified for medicine, but pursued a different, creative path, one that blended music and travel.

Kane poured out the troubles of his past and panic attacks, and turned those stories into song.

With a bank of recordings uploaded to YouTube, Kane caught the attention of Columbia Records, which signed him in 2019, declaring the artist a “huge talent’ with “powerful vocals”.

Kane relocated to Los Angeles, and, soon after, dropped the emotional EP this is what it feels like.

Superstar Dutch DJ Martin Garrix recruited Kane for his single ‘Drown,’ which peaked at No. 12 on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart in March 2020.

Garrix sang Kane’s praises and, in particular, his “crazy voice.”

That voice took him to the next level with his solo single ‘Chicken Tendies,’ which dropped in February and went in at No. 88 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, with 5.5 million U.S. streams and 2,000 downloads in its first week.

‘Chicken Tendies’ is no fowl play. Rather, it’s “about accepting things and relationships I can’t change,” he told Billboard, for an Emerging Artist Spotlight.

The song has notched almost 68 million plays on Spotify and upwards of six million spins on YouTube.

Now, in the space of six months, the 22-year-old is on the verge of a U.K. Top 20 hit, to go with his U.S. Hot 100 effort.

“This is fucking crazy my family,” he says on a social post, clearly overwhelmed by the early success of ‘I Guess I’m In Love’.

A full-length album is said to be in the works.
