Sydney venue Enmore Theatre said its floor “has been assessed” and is “safe” following an unexpected collapse on Thursday night, during a sold-out Genesis Owusu concert.

A witness at the show said Owusu was just three songs in when he noticed the crowd on the main floor begin to part ways, before the theatre was evacuated. Nobody was injured.

“It’s wasn’t until the lights came on that we realised that the floor had collapsed,” photographer Ashley Mar told Tone Deaf.

Despite some concerns shared with TIO by artists and their reps today, all scheduled events – including a Young Franco gig tonight (Mar. 4th) – will proceed as planned.

TIO also understands a team has been working around the clock since last night to repair the damage, with the venue telling ticketholders today that “the venue is safe” and there is “no risk to our patrons”.

In a statement earlier today, the Century Entertainment-owned venue said audience safety was a top priority and blamed the “relentless rain” for the collapse.

“Last night we made the decision to stop the Genesis Owusu show due to three piers at the point where the theatre inclines shifting underneath the carpet, creating an uneven floor,” the statement said.

“This occurred due to the impact of the relentless rain and excessive water inundating the suburb.

“The floor of the theatre has been assessed and remediation works have commenced. We have isolated the section that was affected by water and are further reinforcing the surrounding areas as a further precaution.

“We would like to thank Genesis and his touring party for working with us to ensure the safety of our patrons as a priority.”
