Harry Styles dethrones Ed Sheeran from the ARIA charts

For those who are sick of Ed Sheeran’s name at the top of the ARIA charts are in for some good news this week, while those who like to see chart records broken won’t be too happy, as this week’s ARIA charts have seen Ed Sheeran dethroned as the king of the ARIA charts.

Harry Styles’ debut solo single ‘Sign Of The Times’ has managed to knock Ed Sheeran off the top of the charts after a solid 13 weeks at number one. Sheeran’ ‘Shape Of You’, which would have managed to break the record for most consecutive weeks at number one this week, dethroning Coolio’s ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ as the previous record holder, has been relegated to the number two position, while his track ‘Galway Girl’ sits at number four.

The rest of the top ten sees very little change from last week, with The Chainsmokers and Coldplay’s ‘Something Like This’ at number three, Zedd’s ‘Stay’ at number five, and Lorde’s ‘Green Light’ and Kendrick Lamar’s ‘HUMBLE.’ sitting at numbers six and seven.

Aussie’s are still underrepresented in the charts this week, with our first homegrown single, ‘Waves’, by Dean Lewis, charting at #25. The Ryan Riback remix of Starley’s ‘Call On Me’ follows at #26, while Pnau’s ‘Chameleon’ rounds out the top 30. Amy Shark’s ‘Adore’ is at #32, while Bliss N Eso’s ‘Moments’ and Sheppard’s ‘Keep Me Crazy’ take up #45 and #47, respectively.

While Sheeran is no longer on top of the singles charts, the albums charts are still a different story. His third record ÷ (Divide) is still at number one, for its sixth week in a row. However, Aussies are giving him a run for his money, with Tina Arena’s self-titled greatest hits record and The Smith Street Band’s More Scared Of You Than You Are Of Me at positions two and three, respectively.

Despite impressively negative reviews this week, The Chainsmokers’ debut Memories..Do Not Open, managed to debut at number four. Positions six through eight feature a run of soundtracks, with the Moana, Beauty And The Beast, and Trolls soundtracks all featuring, before Ed Sheeran and Pentatonix close out the top ten, with X at number nine, and PTX, VOL. 4 at number 10.

The top ten is followed by a raft of chart debuts this week, with Father John Misty’s Pure Comedy at #14, Bethel Music’s Starlight at #15, Falling In Reverse’s Coming Home at #16, Joey Bada$$’ All-Amerikkkan Bada$$ at #19, and rock legends Deep Purple at #20 with Infinite.

Previous number two placeholders Mastodon fall down to number 24 with Emperor Of Sand, but are kept in good company with Racheal Leahcar’s Shadows at #25, and previous number two placeholder Jon Stevens’ Starlight at #28. Other Aussie entries that help round out the top 50 include Drinking From The Sun, Walking Under Stars Restrung by the Hilltop Hoods at #39, The Waifs’ Ironbark at #43, and Deez Nuts’ Binge & Purgatory at #46.

While Aussies are still lacking representation on the singles charts, let’s hope that Ed Sheeran’s dethroning can only lead to a vast change in Aussie charts trends including an introduction of many other Aussie acts from here on.
