Julia Jacklin, King Gizzard, Courtney Barnett, Amyl and The Sniffers up for U.S. awards

Julia Jacklin, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Courtney Barnett, and Amyl and The Sniffers are flying the flag with nominations for the 2020 A2IM Libera Awards, the U.S. indie music community’s annual ceremony.

Julia Jacklin has two chances. Her celebrated second set Crushing (released in the U.S. through Polyvinyl Record Co.) is up for Best Folk/Bluegrass Album, and she’s in the running for Breakthrough Artist/Release, a stacked category that also features Sudan Archives, Black Pumas, Fontaines D.C. and Orville Peck.

Prolific psychedelic rock outfit King Gizzard are also shortlisted for a pair. Their August 2019 heavy set Infest The Rats’ Nest is up for Best Metal Album, while Fishing For Fishies (both via ATO Records) is a chance for Best Outlier Album.

NME cover stars Amyl and The Sniffers’ are up for the A2IM Libera award for Best Punk/Emo Album (via ATO Records), a recording that snagged best rock album at the 2019 ARIA Awards.

Courtney Barnett

Also, indie star Courtney Barnett, whose recordings are issued in the U.S. via Mom+Pop Music, is a chance in the Best Live Act category, one of the night’s top categories which sees her facing her off against Flying Lotus, Mavis Staples, Fontaines D.C. and IDLES.

Held each year in New York, the ninth annual Liberas support and honour “the extraordinary talent of independent artists”. It’s produced by the American Association of Independent Music, the sister organisation of AIR, with a list of sponsors this time including ADA, Ingrooves, Merlin, Qobuz, Songtrust, SoundExchange and The Orchard.

With NYC in the grips of a worrying coronavirus outbreak, the Libera Awards will close it doors to the industry this year and beam out as a “virtual” event on June 18.

The show typically wraps-up A2IM’s Indie Week, which runs June 15-18 and which also flips to an online experience this year.
