Milkpunch scores deal with Altchord: Exclusive

Sydney’s Milkpunch is hitting back with a new deal through Altchord, TIO can exclusively reveal.

The three-piece with a grungey streak joins Altchord ahead of the new single release ‘Cast Me A Spell,’ due out this Friday (5th March) through Altchord Recordings.

Led by 21-year-old Brazilian-Australian Raf Lima, Milkpunch made a splash with Junk Pop, their debut EP release from 2017, and its standout track ‘Iced Tea.’

The record, and its followups, caught the attention of Rolling Stone Australia, Monster Children and Pilerats, among other music titles, and the trio landed support slots with the likes of Tired Lion and Darts.

Their debut album Moonshine dropped in 2018. And more new tunes arrived in 2020, in the shape of the five-pack Polly Gummy, which distills Milkpunch’s low-fi stoner-rock goodness.

Its title track, remarks Dave Ruby Howe, music director of triple j Unearthed, captures Milkpunch “moving through the gears with ease and skill! It’s covered in this ’90s power pop gone grunge feel.”

Frontman Lima used the 2020 isolation period to weave ‘Cast Me A Spell,’ which is abuzz with fuzzy guitars, delicate harmonies and a ‘90s pop-meets-rock sensibility. Oscar Dawson (Holy Holy, San Mei, Tia Gostelow) mixed the single.

The development process for ‘Spell,’ explains Lima, was “an exploration of pop magick… philosophies that helped me get through social isolation and prevented me from going a little bit crazy during that period”.

The new signing presses all the right buttons, enthuses Altchord’s Zac Gould. “When Milkpunch was first sent to me by Lola Scott, I instantly was transported back to hearing Weezer’s Blue Album for the first time, gritty, intelligent and catchy as hell.”

Altchord, Gould tells TIO, “was launched to harbour any genre if we love the music, and we’re so excited to have the trust of Milkpunch for their next step in their careers.”

Melbourne-based ALTCHORD launched last year, gathering Gould’s management clients from Smack Face Music, including San Mei, Lola Scott, Michael McCartney, HANNI and Tbi$h, the Brisbane-based drill artist who recently signed with Niche Talent Agency.

On the label side, ALTCHORD is a partnership with Ingrooves Music Group, the U.S.-based distribution, technology and marketing company. It’s roster also includes AnnaLina.
