Olivia Rodrigo, Glass Animals, The Kid LAROI dominate year-end ARIA Charts

2021 was a year like no other, a rollercoaster of lockdowns, optimism, of future wins, and golden heroes. It was also the year of the youngsters: Olivia Rodrigo and The Kid LAROI.

The newcomers, who will battle it out for the best new artist trophy at the 2022 Grammy Awards, were among the big winners in ARIA’s year-end charts, published today (Jan. 13).

Based on ARIA data, Rodrigo, the teen sensation from California, had the No. 1 album in Australia last year. Her debut Sour held off Adele’s 30 (the year’s best-seller on wax) and LAROI’s evolving mixtape F**k Love (Over You), respectively.

Sour yielded two ARIA No. 1 singles in ‘Drivers License’ (6 weeks) and ‘Good 4 U’ (5 weeks) — both of which cracked ARIA’s year-end singles chart — along with the Top 10 tracks ‘Deja Vu’ (No. 3) and ‘Traitor’ (No. 5).

LAROI had a remarkable year, during which the Sydney-raised lad scored APRA and ARIA Awards, and led charts in Australia and his adopted homeland, the United States.

With F**k Love, the teen singer and rapper is the only Australian act to impact the 2021 ARIA End Of Year Albums Chart Top 10, while two tracks from it appear in the year-end singles survey: ‘Stay,’ his collaboration with Justin Bieber (at No. 2), and ‘Without You’ with Miley Cyrus (No. 4).

During the year, ‘Stay’ logged 14 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the ARIA Singles Chart between July and October, good enough for third place on the list of longest-ever runs at the summit.

LAROI (real name Charlton Howard) performed ‘Stay’ at the 2021 ARIA Awards, where he helped himself to Best Artist and Best Pop Release.

‘Without You’ dropped in December 2020 and climbed to No. 1 in May 2021 following the release of a remix featuring Miley Cyrus. Now, ‘Stay’ and ‘Without You’ are five-times platinum certified.

Glass Animals’ ‘Heat Waves’ ends the year right where it started: at No. 1.

The song landed at No. 1 on the triple j hottest 100 last January, spent six weeks at No. 1 on the ARIA Singles Chart and it finished the year as the top song on the ARIA End Of Year Singles Chart Top 10.
