Post Malone’s ‘beerbongs & bentleys’ smokes Spotify records

Whether you dig him or dismiss him as an overhyped twit, Post Malone is now a worldwide record-setter.

Postie’s second album Beerbongs & Bentleys dropped on Friday and swiftly set about busting benchmarks for streams on Spotify.

The Swedish digital music service congratulated the singer for Beerbongs’ 47,930,039 plays in the United States, and 78,744,748 global streams, both new records. The latter feat crushing the previous mark of 61.3 million set by Drake’s More Life in March 2017.

Ed Sheeran’s Divide is third on the list with 56.7 million streams in just 24 hours; Divide, however, is much more than a one-day wonder; it’s 5.63 billion to-date total is an all-time record.

Beerbongs‘ first-week streams will surely be enormous and possibly historic, and only a fool would bet against the LP smoking the opposition on charts around the world.

A good chunk of those streams were no doubt generated in Australia, where two Beerbongs has spawned a string of bona-fide hits, including ‘Rockstar,’ which hit No. 1 on the ARIA Singles Chart and is four-times platinum, and the platinum-certified ‘Psycho,’ No. 3 on this week’s chart. Malone’s signature song, “Rockstar” is cruising towards the 1 billion global streams milestone (it’s currently at 969 million streams).

Streaming records are there to be broken, and Beerbongs will be usurped before long. But with Spotify racing ahead of its streaming rivals, and boasting a base of 73-76 million paid subscribers in the first quarter of this year, Malone can look forward to some healthy royalties.
