Leading U.K. indie distributor Proper Music Group has struck a deal to distribute recordings from Dot Dash, Remote Control’s in-house label.
Through the new arrangement, Proper will distribute physical cuts from Dot Dash throughout Europe and the U.K. Also, Proper will handle new frontline releases, using its “extensive network of delivery partners to boost Dot Dash’s entire roster,” many of whom already enjoy strong fanbases across the Continent and beyond, a joint statement reads.
Dot Dash was launched in 2004 as Remote Control’s in-house label for its homegrown roster. Over time, the label has worked with with the indie world’s leading lights, including Methyl Ethel, Chet Faker, Wolf & Cub, King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard, Client Liaison, Banoffee, Total Giovanni, Gabriella Cohen and others.
Dot Dash has “a brilliant roster, many of whom are making serious waves in the U.K. and Europe,” explains Proper Music Group managing director Drew Hill. “We really connect with their independent ethos and, with our strong retail connections and their great music, we can’t wait to watch this popularity flourish.”
The first pan-European release through the new deal will be Gena Rose Bruce’s debut LP Can’t Make You Love Me, which is expected out in early 2020. The hotly-tipped Melbourne vocalist with the smoky voice will support the release with a performance at SXSW in March.

Dot Dash’s co-founders Steve Cross and Harvey Saward paid tribute to Dan Nevin, former AIR CEO and now London-based digital music consultant, for helping set up the deal.
“It’s a very exciting time for Dot Dash,” Cross and Saward say. “Everything seems to be pointing in the same direction and this new partnership with Proper comes at exactly the right time.’
Cross and Saward set up Remote Control back in 2001. The company provides publicity and marketing services, label management and distribution to international and local artists and labels in Australia and New Zealand, and boasts a relationship with many of the world’s coolest indies, from 4AD to Rough Trade, XL Recordings, Young Turks and Matador.
The team has worked on releases by the likes of Adele Queens Of The Stone Age, Radiohead, The xx, The National, FKA Twigs, Kamasi Washington, Radiohead and many more.
Alongside its roster, Remote Control provides label services to Courtney Barnett and the artists on Milk! Records, winner of the AIR best indie label in 2018 and 2015.
Set up in 1988 by Malcolm Mills, Proper Music Group offers sales and marketing, distribution, label services, fulfilment and more to independent music labels and rightsholders. It’s recognised as the U.K.’s largest totally independent distributor.
