Considering the violence and hate speech involving white nationalists that has erupted across America over the past few weeks (well, over the past four hundred years), many major digital services have stepped up in an effort to stamp out such hateful content from appearing on their various platforms.
Digital Music News published an article a few days ago which highlighted 37 white supremacist bands found on Spotify.
Spotify have responded with a statement saying they’ve started actively removing “hate bands,” from their service, explaining that “illegal content or material that favors hatred or incites violence against race, religion, sexuality or the like is not tolerated by us.”
“Spotify takes immediate action to remove any such material as soon as it has been brought to our attention”, the statement continues. “We are glad to have been alerted to this content – and have already removed many of the bands identified today, whilst urgently reviewing the remainder.”
In case you’re stuck for music to listen to that isn’t filled with vitriol and racism, Spotify have assembled a playlist named Patriotic Passion which basically scoops up any popular song vaguely about America. It’s embedded below, but best to just listen to Tom Petty’s ‘American Girl’ on loop.
