The Kid LAROI’s ‘Stay’ was one of Spotify’s most-streamed songs of 2021

The Kid LAROI was a fully-grown beast on Spotify in 2021, finished the year with one of the most-streamed songs on planet and hi-jacking the ears of Australian users.

The Sydney-raised, Los Angeles-based singer and rapper makes a strong showing in Spotify’s annual Wrapped campaign, published today (Dec. 2).

The teenage phenom is recognised as the most-streamed Australian artist of the year, and his hit ‘Stay’ with Justin Bieber was the No. 3 most-streamed song globally on Spotify, the streamer reports, behind Olivia Rodrigo’s breakout hit ‘Drivers License’ (with more than 1.1 billion streams) and Lil Nas X’s ‘Montero (Call Me By Your Name),’ respectively.

The Kid will get a chance to flip the script at next year’s Grammy Awards, when he challenges Rodrigo in the Best New Artist category.

It’s the second consecutive year an Australian artist has enjoyed a podium finish on Spotify’s year-end most-streamed tally.

In 2020, Tones And I’s ‘Dance Monkey’ came in at No. 2 on the streamer’s chart.

In other major global categories, Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny is named Spotify’s Top Global Artist for the year, after chalking-up a mind-boggling 9.1 billion streams; while Rodrigo’s chart-topping debut Sour was the Top Global Album.

The Kid LAROI has two of the five-most streamed songs by an Australian artist on the service, with ‘Stay’ at No. 1, ‘Without You’ at No. 2 and ‘So Done’ at No. 3, while Masked Wolf’s viral smash ‘Astronaut In The Ocean’ floats in at No. 3 on the list.

Proving she’s no “one-hit wonder,” Tones completes the Australian-artist Top 5 with ‘Fly Away,’ lifted from her full-length debut album Welcome to the Madhouse.

The Kid is crowned most-streamed Australian artist, leading a mixed-bunch of legendary Aussie acts that includes The Wiggles, Hilltop Hoods, AC/DC and Flume, respectively.

The Spotify 2021 Wrapped results is a handy glimpse into what’s hot on the world’s leading subscription, one that boasts more than more than 381 million users worldwide and 172 million “paid” subs.

“With ‘normal’ thrown out the window,” reads a company statement, “we embraced the unknown and championed all of the things that make each of us unique. Spotify’s 2021 Wrapped is a celebration of this — the millions of weird and wonderful ways to listen and live in a world that continues to keep us on our toes.”

Since the turn the year, the teenage singer rapper has bagged his first leader on the Billboard 200 albums chart with his evolving F*ck Love mixtape, and ruled the Billboard Hot 100 with ‘Stay’.

He also hit No. 1 on the ARIA singles and albums charts, smashing records in the process.

Along with way, he scored his first APRA Music Award (for Best Newcomer), the National Indigenous Music Award for Best Artist, two ARIA Awards, including best artist, and he’s shortlisted for a statuette at the 2022 Grammys.
