ARIA’s 2020 year-end charts: The Weeknd, Tones And I, Tame Impala rule

2020 was a long, tough race. Today, The Weeknd, Tones And I and Tame Impala were among the declared winners.

ARIA shares its 2020 year-end charts, which are ruled by the likes of The Weeknd, Tones, Harry Styles, AC/DC and Tame Impala.

Despite failing to score a nomination in any category at the 2021 Grammy Awards, The Weeknd (aka Abel Tesfaye) got a lot of love in Australia last year for ‘Blinding Lights.’

Lifted from his fourth studio album After Hours, ‘Blinding Lights’ is the leader on the 2020 ARIA Singles Top 10, ahead of SAINt JHN’s ‘Roses’ and Dua Lipa’s ‘Don’t Start Now.’

Not bad for a song released in November 2019.

The Canadian R&B singer’s omnipresent hit went to No. 1 on the ARIA Singles Chart in January 2020 and stayed there for 10 weeks in total, longer than any other single during the year, earning him an ARIA Award nomination for best international act.

The highest-ranked homegrown single is Tones And I’s ‘Dance Monkey,’ which comes in at No. 4 on the ARIA Singles Top 10 and is the only Australian single to crack the year-end top tier.

Tones’ record-busting 2019 smash recently topped two billion spins on Spotify and is the third most-played track ever on the streamer.

The one-time busker locks-up the top two positions on ARIA’s Australian Artists Singles Top 10, which is led by ‘Dance Monkey’ at No. 1, with its followup ‘Never Seen The Rain’ at No. 2.

All told, Tones (real name Toni Watson) snags four spots in the 2020 Australian Artists Singles Chart.

Meanwhile, Flume’s ‘Rushing Back’ featuring Vera Blue, The Rubens’ ‘Live In Life,’ and Sam Fischer’s ‘This City’ complete the Aussie top five, respectively.

One-time One Direction star Harry Styles swerved the sophomore blues with Fine Line, his second solo album.

It’s the No. 1 title on the 2020 ARIA Albums Top 10, despite having spent just one week atop the weekly ARIA Albums Chart.

Fine Line played the long game, as it stayed in the national Top Ten for 48 weeks across 2020.

Australians were wild about Harry. The Brit took out the fan voted best international act gong at the 2020 ARIA Awards.

AC/DC

AC/DC made a roaring comeback with Power Up, which topped charts around the globe.

Angus Young and Co. take out the Australian Artists Albums Chart, even though Power Up was released in mid-November, with just six chart eligible weeks.

Power Up rocks in at No. 4 on the all-titles year-end chart, behind Styles’ second effort, Taylor Swift’s folklore and Billie Eilish’s When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?

And the best selling record on wax? Step on up Kevin Parker, whose fourth Tame Impala LP The Slow Rush topped the inaugural 2020 Vinyl Albums Top 10, ahead of Powerfinger’s 20th anniversary edition of Odyssey Number Five.
