Tones And I’s ‘Dance Monkey’ dominates Apple Music, Shazam year-end charts

For Tones And I, the year ends pretty much how it started: On top of the world.

Tones’ ‘Dance Monkey’ comes in at No. 1 on Apple Music’s global list of Top 25 Shazamed Songs, and it’s No. 3 on the streaming giant’s list of most-played songs of the year, behind only Roddy Ricch’s ‘The Box’ and The Weeknd’s ‘Blinding Lights,’ respectively.

But wait, there’s more. ‘Dance Monkey’ finishes at No. 2 on Apple Music’s ‘Top 25 Lyrics of 2020’ list, behind only Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s ‘WAP,’ of course.

Apple Music’s editorial team are still fawning over a track which emerged out of Australia in May 2019, to become an unstoppable global hit.

Music fans have Shazamed the song 24.6 million times over the year. “Rewriting Shazam’s record books, the song is the most Shazamed track not only this year, but also of all time,” reads a statement from Apple Music.

According to the tech giant, ‘Dance Monkey’ started to break on the platform in September 2019, and remained in the top 40 on the Apple Music Global Daily Top 100 chart a full year later.

Now, it boasts the second-longest consecutive weeks streak on the chart.

Success on Apple Music is nothing to sniff at. The streamer last shared specific subscriber numbers back in June 2019, when it announced 60 million paid users.

According to published reports, that number has lifted to 72 million in June 2020, trailing only Spotify among the big international players.

As it recaps its year in music, Apple Music has posted its insights into the big hits and most popular artists for Australian subscribers in 2020.

It’s another win for Tones, as ‘Dance Monkey’ rules the Top 100 Most Streamed Songs chart for Australia, ahead of ‘Blinding Lights’ and Dua Lipa’s ‘Don’t Start Now’.

And the No. 1 artist on Apple Music in Australia? Taylor Swift stands atop the podium, with Ed Sheeran and Eminem taking the minor medals.

Earlier in the week, ‘Dance Monkey’ came in at No. 2 on Spotify’s most-streamed list for 2020.

The song is clearly one of the biggest breakout hits to begin life in these parts, crashing the ARIA Singles Chart for a record 24-week non-consecutive run at No. 1, and ruling the Official U.K. Singles Chart for 11 weeks, a record for a solo female artist.

In the United States, ‘Dance Monkey’ peaked at No. 4, and became the first top five Hot 100 hit solely written by a woman in over eight years, Billboard reports. The last time it happened was when Whitney Houston’s version of Dolly Parton’s ‘I Will Always Love You’ reached No. 3 in March 2012, after Houston’s death.

Tones (real name Toni Watson) will perform her hit at the 2020 Streamy Awards, on Saturday 12th December.

She got into the swing of things with a performance overnight of her new number ‘Fly Away’ on popular late-night U.S. TV show Jimmy Kimmel Live.
